The Foundation

The Committee for Civic Initiative originated during the three-month civic protests of 1996/1997 brought on by the electoral fraud at local elections in 1996. Its original aim was to preserve at least part of citizens’ energy and enthusiasm and to contribute to the rise of civic consciousness.
The CCI was founded by a group of citizens, mostly university professors and assistants, willing to invest their knowledge and energy in the development of an open and democratic civil society.

CCI Today

Today, eight years later, the CCI has 27 active members, out of whom 19 are professors and assistants from the University of Nis (sociologists, psychologists, philosophers, linguists and political scientists) and more than 300 volunteers in the region of south and east Serbia. The main stream of the CCI's activities is education for democracy, i.e. the education of citizens for active participation in a democratic, multicultural, pluralist society.

The CCI organizes schools, seminars, courses, public lectures, and other educational programs for citizens, but it also organizes and coordinates various activities in which civic activism is fully expressed.

On 11 January 2002 the Committee for Civic Initiative was awarded the major prize of the City of Nis, as the most successful organization in the city in the previous year.

Due to the range of activities and the number of members and volunteers, the Committee for Civic Initiative is at present one of the biggest non-governmental organizations in Serbia.
